Motor vehicle theft investigation in Mount Vernon

(MOUNT VERNON)- The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a report of a theft of a vehicle in the 1700 block of Sandalwood Street just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

The reporting party told officers that his vehicle had been taken from where it had been parked in front of his house overnight, according to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department. He also told officers that there had been firearms in the vehicle when it was stolen.

At around 11:30 a.m., the vehicle’s owner recontacted police reporting that he had located his vehicle in the 21000 block of Francis Rd. He further reported that his vehicle was currently occupied. When officers attempted to contact the vehicle, the driver attempted to elude, crashing through a gate and driving into a wooded area. The suspect fled the vehicle on foot. With the assistance of the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office K9 team, police were able to locate the suspect just after 5 p.m. in the 21000 block of Francis Road and take him into custody.

Upon searching the stolen vehicle, officers recovered firearms consistent with those described by the vehicle’s owner.

The suspect, a 35-year-old white male, was booked into the Skagit County Community Justice Center for theft of a motor vehicle, attempting to elude a police vehicle, and three counts of unlawful possession of firearms.
