SR 20 reduced to single lane in each direction Tuesday, Sept. 15, east of Swinomish Channel

(SKAGIT COUNTY)- SR 20 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, between the east side of the Swinomish Channel bridges and SR 536/Memorial Highway (mileposts 51 to 55). Both eastbound and westbound lanes and the right shoulders will close at different times during work hours, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Drivers should slow down, expect delays and follow signs and directions from crew members in the area.

During the lane reductions, WSDOT crews will sample pavement in the area to prepare for a paving project scheduled for construction in 2027. The project will grind away existing pavement and replace it with a new layer of asphalt to create a safer ride and extend the highway’s service life. Existing pedestrian crossings in the area also will be updated to comply with current Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
