$12 million federal grant to improve truck parking in western United States announced

(OLYMPIA)– The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the award of a $12 million grant to the states of Washington, Oregon and California to provide truck drivers with real-time truck parking availability information. The project, funded through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America program, will deploy a regional truck parking information management system at approximately 54 truck parking facilities along the entire length of the I-5 corridor, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation. Skagit Valley College names Darren Greeno as vice president of academic affairs

(MOUNT VERNON)- Skagit Valley College named Darren Greeno, a dynamic leader in higher education with more than 17 years of experience, as its vice president of academic affairs. He will begin his permanent role on Feb. 1. Greeno has been serving as SVC’s interim vice president of academic affairs for the past six months, according to a news release from SVC. Prior to that, he served as the executive dean of instruction and the dean of workforce education, overseeing professional and technical programs since 2015. “I am honored and excited to serve as the vice president of academic affairs,” said Greeno.     (read more)

Skagit Valley College Foundation receives a $1.68 million bequest, its third-largest gift in its history

(MOUNT VERNON)- The Skagit Valley College Foundation received the third-largest gift in its history, a $1.68 million bequest from the estate of Stella Rolph. The gift will be endowed and used to fund two scholarships, according to a news release from SVC. The donor, Stella Rolph of Burlington, passed away in December 2022. The Stella Rolph Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to students in two categories: SVC students pursuing two-year degrees and students who have earned SVC degrees who plan to pursue a bachelor’s or four-year degree from SVC or a Washington state college or university. Environmental penalties issued for the third quarter of 2023

(OLYMPIA)– The Washington Department of Ecology issued $138,800 in penalties of $1,000 or more from July 1 – Sept. 30, 2023. A detailed list of the violations and resulting penalties is on Ecology's website. Ecology works with thousands of businesses and individuals to help them comply with state laws, according to a news release from Ecology. Penalties are issued in cases where non-compliance continues after Ecology has provided technical assistance or warnings, or for particularly serious violations. The money owed from penalties may be reduced from the issued amount due to settlement or court rulings. Funds collected go to the state’s general fund or to     (read more)

Secretary Hobbs notifies Legislature of initiative no. 2124 certification

(OLYMPIA)— Secretary of State Steve Hobbs delivered official notification to the Legislature Thursday that signature verification has been completed and certified for the following Initiative to the Legislature: Initiative to the Legislature no. 2124 concerning state long term care insurance. The signatures on six Initiatives to the Legislature for the 2024 Legislative session have been verified by the Office of the Secretary of State Elections Division using a state-mandated process of examining a 3% random sample of submitted signatures, according to a news release from the Office of the Secretary of State.
